Scrappy Lone Star with Marti Chamberlain

Marti Chamberlain, qwltr4evr.

Marti was destined to be a teacher; she loves to explain something new to anyone who will listen! As a teen in school she enjoyed her sewing classes (cooking classes never held her attention) and was chosen as the sewing teacher for student teacher day.

She made her first quilt in 1974, during the revival of quilting just prior to the Bicentennial. There were no quilt shops where she lived in New Jersey and few publications available for instruction. That didn’t stop her from pursuing quilt making and developing her own style.

She participated in the Heritage Quilt Project of New Jersey, as the photographer documenting quilts found in NJ prior to 1950. The photos are archived at www.quiltindex.org giving her credit under her former name, Marti Porreca. This project influenced her designing and making star quilts in every possible way.

She has lectured about the historical influence of quilts and the impact on women’s lives. She served as chairperson for quilt exhibits in New Jersey and on the board of officers for several guilds both in New Jersey and Delaware. Moving to Delaware 10 years ago and recently retiring from the insurance field has provided her with the time to develop some of her designs as patterns. You can find her most days stitching away at her home on one of 10 sewing machines including her vintage Gammil long arm.
